Highway Improvements Works – A343 Newbury Road/Smannell Road Roundabout

Hampshire County Council has appointed M Group Highway to carry out highway improvement works on the A343 Newbury Road / Smannell Road Roundabout.

Schedule:
• Start Date: 21 July 2025.
• Expected completion: Mid-Autumn 2025.
• Permitted Working Hours: 7:30am to 6pm.

Traffic Management on Newbury Road

Southbound:
21 July to 2 September 2025: continuous 24/7 closure of southbound nearside lane.
3 September to 19 September: daily closure of southbound outside lane between 9:30am and 4pm. The lane will reopen outside these hours.
15 October to 17 October: Night-time road closure between 8pm and 6am. Road open as normal during the day.

Northbound:
22 September to 14 October: Night-time road closure between 8pm and 6am. Road open as normal during the day.

The following construction works will be carried out to install the new signalised crossing on the A343 at the Smannell Road roundabout:

• Resurfacing of the road.
• Digging trenches to install the cables for the traffic signal equipment.
• Installing new traffic signal poles and lights, including push-button units for pedestrians and cyclists.
• Installing tactile (bumpy) paving.
• Kerbing.
• Painting new road markings.
• New road signs.

Construction of a new footpath to create a safer and more direct walking route between Vespasian Road and the A343. The work will include:

• Laying a new surface to form the footway.
• Installing tactile (bumpy) paving.
• Kerbing.
• New road signs.
• Vegetation clearance.
• Verges to be topsoiled and seeded.

Construction of an uncontrolled crossing on King Arthurs Way – Knights Enham School (southern entrance).

• Installing tactile (bumpy) paving.
• Kerbing.

There will be northbound and southbound closures, and a signed diversion route will be in place.
