Highway Night Works – A343 Newbury Road/Smannell Road Roundabout Improvements

Date: 3rd September, 2025

works are progressing on the walking and cycling improvements at the A343 Newbury Road / Smannell Road Roundabout. As part of the final stages of the highway improvement scheme, night working will be required to complete specific elements of the scheme.

Traffic Management on Newbury Road

Northbound:

22 September to 14 October: Night-time road closure between 8pm and 6am. Road open as normal during the day.
Works to be carried out include;
• installation of ducting (protective tubes for cabling)
• construction of new buildouts (where the pavement extends slightly into the road. This narrows the road at that point and encourages drivers to slow down and drive more carefully).
• kerbs
• laying new tactile (bumpy) paving
• resurfacing of the road

Northbound and Southbound:

15 October to 17 October: Night-time road closure between 8pm and 6am. Road open as normal during the day.
Works to be carried out include;
• resurfacing of the road
• painting white lines
• loop cutting (small grooves are cut into the road surface to install sensors used to control traffic lights)

There will be northbound and southbound closure, and a signed diversion route will be in place.
